Wedding Dress Jellyfish, 2005 (video still), from the series "Hollow Beings", 3D digital animation, screen projection, sound, courtesy of the artist
Leon David
Using a 3D animation technology borrowed from the world of cinematic production, Leon David has created subaquatic creatures that belong to the family of "Hollow Beings": one is a female creature resembling a jellyfish (Wedding Dress), which opens up as it spreads out its dress with circular movements. The second is a phallic, male creature resembling a sea cucumber (Centilus Maximus), which points upwards and sprays jets of semen. "As their name indicates," says the artist, "these are hollow creatures largely composed of an envelope that creates pockets of air and water, in which all the activities necessary to sustain them take place." This envelope is composed of fibers in a range of stunning patterns, which are reminiscent of lacework. The virtual nature digitally created by the artist is based on contrasts that parallel the real world. The lace in this work functions as a metaphor for the digital network, and for the cyberspace that surrounds us.
