Stephan Goldrajch
Stephan Goldrajch's masks were meticulously knit out of wool, pearls, yarn and ribbons, using a crochet technique. These prints were produced by scanning the masks and printing them in a uniform display format. The names of these works indicate the exact moment in which they were completed. The masks are perceived as extensions of the self, which endow it with magical powers or a false identity. Their wide-ranging cultural contexts, and their relation to ceremonies and rituals in numerous cultures and religions, enhance their expressive power. Their grotesque ugliness is heart wrenching, while their monstrous distortion - created by means of soft and colorful materials - transforms them into lost creatures that have been compassionately redeemed by the artist's hands.
