Men's 10 Meter / 100 Meter Thread, 2007 (detail), embroidery on plastic sheet, 45 x 1000 cm, courtesy of the artist
Guy Goldstein
Guy Goldstein's embroidery work is concerned with the multiple meanings of lines - borderlines, tension lines, finishing lines and victory lines - as they relate to concepts of competitiveness and ambition. This embroidery work, which was created on a disposable tablecloth, is exhibited on its reverse side. This form of display is intended to highlight the inherently imperfect and disordered nature of the work process. The embroidered image is copied from photo finish shots of running races. The photo finish camera rapidly registers the athletes' movement, and captures numerous frames in a single second. In this embroidery work, the race track resembles a musical staff - the horizontal lines upon which note symbols are placed - while the running men are melodiously spread out across the long lines.
