Yamaguchi Akira

Born in 1969 in Tokyo. He lives in Tokyo.

Yamaguchi paints in the Yamato-e style, which emerged in the Heian period (Yamato being the old name for Japan). Among the hallmarks of this style are the depiction of scenes from a bird's-eye view using parallel projection, the rendering of golden clouds hanging over the landscape, and the omission here and there of roofs of buildings, offering glimpses of their interiors. Using this style, which combines elements of ultra-realism and unrealism while remaining entirely representational, Yamaguchi depicts in detail scenes in which the past, present, and future merge. The exhibited work is an original for a piece of public art installed in an underground station in Tokyo.
