Yuken Teruya

Born in 1973 on the island of Okinawa. He lives in New York.

The work of Yuken Teruya displays the same attention to detail, elegance, and subtlety of form that is found in Japanese culture as a whole, and is addressed to topical social and political issues. A work referencing Okinawan history is Teruya's contribution to the exhibition. Called "You-I, You-I" (2002), it is a kimono decorated using the traditional Okinawa technique of bingata. Among images of the island's flora and fauna are American jets and paratroopers, serving as a reminder of the U.S. military presence on Okinawa.
