Leigh Orpaz

Leigh Orpaz

Born in New York in 1977, lives and works in Tel Aviv.

The choice of imagery in Leigh Orpaz's works is an expression of photography's Sisyphean effort to capture reality. Light, which enables photography, appears in her works as a means that at times hinders vision and even blocks it. The elusive images in her photographs and video works-a sand castle, the flicker of a lighthouse, an ice swan, fireworks-which continually hold the tension between the stationary image and the moving image, refuse to be fixed in reality, appearing and vanishing "like it never happened," to borrow the title of one of her videos and photography installations, leaving nothing but their memory in the space. Orpaz's photography seeks to take on the disappearance of memory, both common and personal, and create in its place an enticing and mysterious image.
